COFFEE TABLE - TEAK

Although teak is not officially categorised as endangered, its sustainability is now under discussion and there is common agreement that it is ‘vulnerable’. Ron Skinner asked us if we would design and build a coffee table for him – in teak. Our initial concerns were allayed. Ron had been storing some teak in his garage for over 30 years, having brought it back to the UK from Trinidad where he once worked. He was clear on the approximate dimensions he wanted, but gave us free rein to design the table within the confines of his available stock.

The design indulged a few ideas including the raised leg profile to showcase the beauty of the end-grain, and a discreet pull-out centre section to access storage beneath. A modest dovetailed drawer at one end features a base from a wine case. Other detailing includes dowels, tenon wedges and a handmade drawer knob in African Blackwood.
